CAMBRIAN SYMPHONY ANNOUNCES “FROM ROMANTIC TO SURREAL”
- Soloist Adelle-Akiko Kearns to perform Elgar’s Cello Concerto -
SAN JOSE, California – One of the Bay Area's premier orchestras, Cambrian Symphony, is pleased to announce that they will be performing their second concert for this season on Friday, February 3, 2017 called “From Romantic to Surreal.” The program includes Nocturnes by Claude Debussy and Polovtsian Dances by Alexander Borodin, and will feature Adelle-Akiko Kearns in Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E Minor.
San Francisco native Adelle-Akiko Kearns has been hailed by critics as an “impressive” cellist exhibiting "beautifully sensuous cello playing." Ms. Kearns is the recipient of the prestigious Artists International Award and has appeared on the world’s most important stages including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Suntory Hall, Davies Symphony Hall, and many others. Ms. Kearns has also performed as soloist with the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Auburn Symphony, the Juilliard Conductors’ Orchestra, the West Valley Symphony (Arizona), the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Orchestra, the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra, and the Pacific Chamber Symphony.
“I’m really looking forward to performing the gorgeous Elgar Cello Concerto with the Cambrian Symphony!” said Ms. Kearns. “This concerto has always been one of my favorites. As a teenager, I would frequently watch a video of the legendary Jacqueline du Pre performing it and it was always a dream of mine to be able to perform it with a full orchestra. I have been lucky to perform the orchestral cello part of this piece at least 10 times and hear so many great cellists’ interpretations of this glorious masterpiece live, so I have a multitude of ideas now of what I can do. It’s really exciting and I can’t wait for the performance!”
“We are so thrilled to have Ms. Kearns as our featured cellist and I am honored that she will be performing with the Cambrian Symphony,” said Scott Krijnen, Cambrian Symphony's conductor. “For every concert, we want to delight our audiences with a variety of different styles of music and I am very excited about our February program.”
The title of the program, “From Romantic to Surreal,” is inspired by the characters of the pieces. Debussy’s Nocturnes invoke dreamlike and surreal imagery as compared to the Cello Concerto by Elgar and Polovtsian Dances by Borodin. These two pieces are more romantic in nature because of its melodic gestures. This concert is a nostalgic look at how music touches the audience by using their senses and memories that the music evokes.
The free concert will be held on Friday, February 3rd at San Jose State's Music Concert Hall at 7:30 pm. There will be one additional concert this season on June 16, 2017.
