CAMBRIAN SYMPHONY OPENS 2018-19 SEASON WITH TALES FROM AFAR
- Soloist Elbert Tsai joins Cambrian Symphony for Violin Concerto No. 1 by Paganini -
SAN JOSE, California – Named “Best of the Bay” in two categories by San Francisco Classical Voice in 2017, Cambrian Symphony is pleased to announce its season-opening concert of the 2018 -2019 season, Tales From Afar. To begin the concert, Cambrian Symphony will be joined by the esteemed violin soloist Elbert Tsai who will perform the Violin Concerto No. 1 by Niccolò Paganini. Following this piece, the orchestra will perform Pohjola’s Daughter, Op. 49 by Jean Sibelius and then conclude the concert with the Hary Janos Suite, Op. 35a by Zoltán Kodály.
“As we enter our fourth season, I am thrilled to be collaborating with so many incredible artists to bring music into the concert hall,” said Scott Krijnen, conductor for Cambrian Symphony. “For our opening concert, we welcome Elbert Tsai, a dynamic violinist, performing one of the most virtuosic concertos written for the instrument and then we pair that with two tales from afar, depicting exotic colors and sounds from distant lands. I love getting to work through the score in preparation for our first rehearsal and am looking forward to working, once again, with the musicians of the Cambrian Symphony.”
"I am thrilled to be performing with the Cambrian Symphony and Maestro Scott Krijnen, who has been a friend and partner in musical education for a few years now,” said Mr. Tsai. “Our piece of choice is Paganini's Concerto No. 1, which is full of pyrotechnics as well as operatic melodies. We look forward to sharing this musical journey and labor of love."
Virtuoso violinist Elbert Tsai leads a multifaceted career as a soloist, chamber musician, and sought-after pedagogue. He currently serves on the violin faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory Pre-College as well as Center Stage Strings at the University of Michigan School of Music. In 2018, he will join the Oberlin Conservatory for three weeks as a guest professor. Previously, he taught at the Luzerne Music Center, Crowden School, and SFCM Collegiate Division. Elbert's recitals, which often celebrate the short showpieces and gems of the instrument’s 450-year musical history, have been featured recently at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Three Rivers Performing Arts Institute, Pomona College, Le Petit Trianon Theatre, and Colburn School for the Performing Arts. Early in his professional career, Elbert won positions with the San Francisco Ballet and San Francisco Symphony orchestras, touring with the symphony throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. He holds degrees from the University of Southern California, Rice University, and Oberlin College. For more information, please visit www.elberttsai.com.
