CAMBRIAN SYMPHONY ANNOUNCES PREMIER CONCERT FOR 2017-2018 SEASON WITH SONGS AND STORIES
- Opera San Jose soloists Veronica Jensen and Krassen Karagiozov join Cambrian Symphony -
SAN JOSE, California – Recently named “Best of the Bay” in two categories by San Francisco Classical Voice, Cambrian Symphony is pleased to announce its premier concert for the 2017-2018 season, Songs and Stories. Songs and Stories will open Cambrian Symphony’s third season on Saturday, September 16th at 7:30 pm, featuring Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (arr. Ravel). In addition, Opera San Jose stars Veronica Jensen and Krassen Karagiozov will join Cambrian Symphony to perform selections from Bizet’s Carmen.
“All of us are living a story and experiencing our own personal journey, and as we walk from one day to the next, we see and hear all those experiences with our own living soundtrack,” said Scott Krijnen, conductor for Cambrian Symphony. “For the opening of our third season, we bring to our audience moments in time from Tchaikovsky's 2nd Symphony and the use of folk song to bring alive late 19th century Russia, the expressive storytelling of Bizet's Carmen, and a walk through an art gallery which inspired Mussorgsky to compose Pictures at an Exhibition. Whether a song or a work of art, we all share the need and natural inclination to express ourselves as we process our world, and we are delighted to begin our new season by bringing these works to the San Jose State’s Music Hall.”
Songs and Stories reunites mezzo-soprano Veronica Jensen with Cambrian Symphony and her brother Scott Krijnen at the baton. Ms. Jensen has gained recognition as a versatile and compelling singer, engaging audiences with her commanding stage presence, alluring vocal tone, and sincere expression. A graduate of Indiana University (MM) and Western Washington University (BM), Ms. Jensen is the 2017 recipient of the "Encouragement Award" and "Audience Choice" at the Metropolitan Opera Iowa District competition. She has recently appeared with West Bay Opera as Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Frugola and La Zealtrice (Il Trittico), and with West Edge Opera as Justine (Frankenstein), and this season will perform featured roles with West Bay Opera and Opera San Jose.
“It is a joy to return to a wonderful community like Cambrian Symphony where Scott Krijnen, the musicians, and administrative members have volunteered themselves and their time to create a celebratory atmosphere to explore and share classical music,” said Ms. Jensen. “The result is truly spectacular and the experience a deeply rewarding one.”
Baritone Krassen Karagiozov will join Ms. Jensen and sing highlights of Carmen with Cambrian Symphony. Born in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, Mr. Karagiozov began his musical studies as a pianist. In addition to concert work as a collaborative pianist in Bulgaria, Turkey, and USA, he appeared as baritone soloist for a recital and recordings for the Bulgarian National Radio. During the 2008-2009 season, he made his debut as a member of Opera San José’s resident principal artists, appearing in the title role of Eugene Onegin, Sgt. Belcore (The Elixir of Love), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) and Escamillo (Carmen). Among the roles that he has performed are Papageno, Conte di Luna, Enrico, Germont, Marcello, Vallentin, Figaro, Sharpless, Vronsky, Count Almaviva, Dandini, Don Giovanni, Tarquinius, Silvio, Schaunard, Lescaut, Masetto, Gianni Schicchi, Harlequin, Peter, Daniello, Angelotti, Rambaldo, and Raoul de Gardefeu.
"Cambrian Symphony is truly unique because all the people involved give their time freely to nurture and support the classical arts, which is a medium that is greatly needed yet sadly lacking in our culture,” said Mr. Karagiozov. “The community therefore has access to high quality classical music and even young musicians can enjoy the experience of performing in a symphony; surely an experience they will never forget. I'm honored to make my debut singing with Cambrian Symphony alongside these amazing musicians and colleagues."
The free concert will be held on Saturday, September 16th at San Jose State University's Music Concert Hall at 7:30 pm. Cambrian Symphony’s season will include continued collaboration with San Jose Dance Theatre for their 52nd annual production of The Nutcracker at the Center for the Performing Arts in San Jose in December, 2017. Cambrian Symphony will also hold performances in February, March and June of 2018.
